Photographs from our South West Coast Path walks

South West Coast Path

Watching “Cornwall and Devon Walks With Julia Bradbury”  has had us reminiscing about our walks on the South West Coast Path.  Looking back through the photos reminds us how we felt and how much we appreciated the sheer beauty of the South West Coast Path.  We thought we’d share some of the amazing scenery from our walks so far and have picked out a few favourite spots:

Our journey so far...

Our South West Coast Path walks have taken us to Dawlish Warren in one direction and to Plymouth on the Cornish border in the other.  So far that’s 100.7 miles of South West Coast Path walking and we’re not done yet…

South West Coast Path

The South West Coast Path heading east to this point is fairly demanding with some short but steep ascents, and so it was rewarding to get a great view at the top.  In the distance you can see Teignmouth Pier and our destination Shaldon, a pleasant downhill stroll away.  Shaldon itself is so picturesque along the river Teign and is always photography heaven, whatever the weather.

We had to peel off the coast path and head down to the cove, but it’s worth it for the calm waters and views out to the rock formation of Long Quarry Point. We also cooled off with an ice cream from the cafe while dipping our feet in the sea.  Well worth the small detour.

So many great shots are possible here that I could spend an entire day taking photos. One day we had sun and then heavy showers, leading to brightly lit boats and a dark sky.  I can also recommend a lunch or dinner in The Rockfish restaurant, which itself has the most amazing views of the harbour and fish market.

Daymark Kingswear

Built in 1864 to help boats find the notoriously difficult Dartmouth Harbour, the Daymark is situated above Froward Point and is a favourite leg stretch when we are staying in Kingswear.  The field changes throughout the year, so the light and mood of the tower is always different; green in the spring, golden in the autumn and muddy brown in the winter.  We’ve never got the same shot twice.

Blackpool Sands South West Coast Path

A beautiful sandy beach in a long cove, where we were also lucky enough to see seals.  The South West Coast Path goes right by the beach so It’s worth planning some time to stop and enjoy this lovely and relaxing spot.

An amazing three-mile stretch of pebble beach with the sea on one side and Slapton Ley nature reserve on the other side.  It’s one of our favourite beaches to stroll along and one of the best places for crashing wave sounds.  The beach has a lot of history from the D-day landings (see our post) and the nature reserve has serene walking paths to see bird life and de-tune.

Gammon Head - South West Coast Path

We had a stunning day walking west from Prawle Point to Salcombe on the South West Coast Path.  This is a stunning and rugged section of the coast path, but without having to tackle any large ascents.

The cove itself is picturesque with crystal clear turquoise water.  As we climbed out of the cove onto Bolberry Down, a whole new section of the coast path opens up and the views are breathtaking.  Another area called the Warren has some great rocks for contemplating and taking-in the views.

The Warren South West Coast Path

A well visited beautiful stretch of the coast and if you are looking for a lunch with a difference then The Lobster Pod is perfect.  Lobster, bubbles and a pod to enjoy the views.

Burgh Island

Famous for it’s art deco hotel and located opposite Bigbury beach.  The island is accessible by foot at low tide, but the beach is covered at high tide, leaving a sea tractor as the only means to reach the island (or get back).

The Great Mew Stone

The stretch from the Elm Estuary to Haybrook Bay is probably the easiest bit of the South West Coast Path so far, with beautiful flat paths along the beach.  The views to the Great Mew Stone are present for the whole stretch and on a sunny day last year we couldn’t resist a lunch stop on the rocky outcrops near Wembury Point.

Hope Lake

Heading into Plymouth on the South West Coast Path, we came across a number of wooden boats in Hooe Lake that are visible at low tide.  It has the eery feeling of a graveyard seeing them all scattered about.
