Bar Mezzana – No.6
January 5, 2020
We decided to do brunch and upon arrival at Bar Mezzana, after a morning at the gym, I was really hungry. In fact I was “Hangry”. First impressions were good; a modern, open restaurant with a professional greeting. So, first things first, a cocktail. I was not impressed. Firstly the glass was most uninspiring, sending me back to the start of our adventure at Puritan and Company and their equally boring glass. Then there wasn’t any ice, just liquid, about as sexy as a brick. The taste was not bad but it had lost me by that point.
Bring on the food…this had better be good (ref. Hangry point). We opened up with a PB&J poptart. I was expecting something hot but it was a cold version, and wow, how on earth could that taste so good. In fact so good the frown had gone and we were all smiles again. Quick on its heels were whitefish crostini, which also tasted great and had a slight heat kick, sending me into raptures.
We had moved on to a beer and glass of red wine by now and once again all was good in the world. Whilst this is an Italian restaurant, it retains a very American feel for the brunch service and so we ordered two brunch favourites; a hamburger and a hash. I will let Jackie talk about the Hash (it was hash – you can’t really go wrong) but as for the burger, well!
By now I am sure you are aware we are foodies and the best burger I’d had in Boston was from the Charles Street Bistro, a jazzed up, and totally delicious version of a “Big Mac”, it is so good!! But quite unexpectedly I have a new favourite. No brioche bun in sight, two perfectly cooked, juicy patties, pickles, and two cheeses; American and a Taleggio, an Italian cheese (named after a valley east of Lecco on the Como lake), which goes a little soft and melts, a combination that is perfect. We only have two weeks left and a few restaurants to tackle, but seriously I might have to go back.
From a hangry start to satisfied customers, the transformation was complete!
