Sushi is very high on my list of favourite foods, so I was extremely happy to be going to Cafe Sushi as part of our Top 50 Boston restaurantsendeavour.
To be fully in the spirit of Japan, we could not choose anything but sake. Â Their sake list was very extensive, so we started with a cheaper sake, which was heated up, and then moved onto a more expensive sake, which was served cold (you don’t heat good sake!).
The food at Cafe Sushi
One side of the menu is sushi, the other is split 3 ways; small plates, Mains (whole fish, sushi dinners or bento boxes) and Kama (more about that later). Â Small plates to start and we love a dumpling. Â Here they had two, so hello, pork gyoza and shrimp shumai. Â Onto the sushi and we felt we should choose a bit from each section, so some nigiri (raw fish on top of sushi rice), a maki roll (tempura shrimp and avocado with spicy tuna) and an eel, avocado and spicy snow crab roll. The sushi was really good, with some more interesting combinations than your average spicy tuna or California roll. Â
We finished with the Kama, which is a grilled fish collar – ok, what’s a fish collar? Â Basically the head of the fish, it’s grilled and then you just pick the flesh from anywhere you can find it, like the cheeks. Â It was actually really good and fun to see where we could get the flesh from. Â We’ve since seen it in several other restaurants. Â We weren’t sure if you were supposed to eat the eyeballs – so we decided to leave those. Â Perhaps on another occasion.
Cafe sushi is simple, with wooden tables, a sushi bar area and basic decoration, but the sushi is top notch, really good quality. Â It was full and had a great atmosphere. Â The best sushi spot we’ve been to so far in Boston.
