Giulia – No.12

Giulia

No.13 has closed for business and so we’re off to Giulia and another taste of Italy.  I had almost given up on visiting Giulia as I had tried for a month to get a booking, but they were always full (which says great things about Giulia).  It was only a last minute attempt the day before that allowed us our reservation.  Yay!

I can see why it’s difficult to get a table here.  When we arrived at 6.15 the restaurant was almost full, even the bar seats were all taken.  The atmosphere was good and lively and our waitress came straight over and was really bubbly as she explained the menu and specials of the day, of which we couldn’t resist the sound of the swordfish.  As she pointed out that there were only 4 left, we jumped in straight away and reserved one of those and chose the rest of our food based on that.

There it is again…octopus, and of course we had to try it, this time served with smoked squid, chickpeas, tomatoes and citrus.  Delicious.

After our last Italian, where we were a little too enthusiastic with the quantity we ordered, we decided this time to stick to one starter and one main to share and then a pasta dish each. Clark chose a pasta with ragu (man, meat, no brainer) and I opted for a Bigoli en salsa; Bigoli being a spaghetti like pasta, but with a hollow middle.  I can assure you this makes for interesting eating as you cannot suck the pasta in, meaning excellent fork pasta twirling techniques are required.

Our finale of swordfish was beautiful.  The fish was so moist (and this is one that is horrible if it’s overcooked) and served with soft roasted peppers and aubergine (eggplant for the Americans) and a bitter leaf and olive salad, was the perfect finish to our meal, and one that left us once again rather full.  Ok, we were stuffed, will we ever learn?  Perhaps one pasta is enough?  I think we have a few more Italians left to test the theory.
